Nailing The (Virtual) Interview!

By Anna Jinarak posted 02-24-2023 10:46

Virtual interviewing is now a norm in today's society, especially after the last three years all thanks to the global pandemic. Since more and more companies are adopting a remote workforce, virtual interviews are here to stay. Now this isn't a bad thing - interviewing virtually allows you to be in the comfort of your own home, and who wouldn't want that?

Well, virtual interviews are just as important as face-to-face interviews and the goal is to leave a memorable and positive impression on the interviewers. The tips below will help you best prepare to nail the virtual interview!

  1. Look professional

Yes, you should still dress as if you are going to an in-person interview. Why? Showing up on Zoom or Microsoft Teams like you would in person will show the interviewer that you care and are taking this interview seriously. If you are looking good, the odds are that you will feel confident going into the interview.

  1. Prepare your tech to avoid glitches

Ensure your Wi-Fi connection is stable and that your equipment is charged and ready to go. Download the respective video platform (Zoom, MS Teams, Google Meet, etc.) ahead of time, or make sure that the browser version works before your interview. The video link is usually allocated for a specific time and date, therefore you won't be able to connect prior.

Make sure you have good lighting so that the interviewers can see you clearly!

Additionally, always check that your audio is functioning or that you have a working headset with a microphone so that interviewers can hear you clearly.

  1. Minimize distractions

Working from home adds a layer of distractions that you might not be used to. We understand that things and circumstances sometimes change. If you are worried about any distractions, feel free to give the interviewer a heads up that there could be possible distractions. Here are some additional reminders to limit distractions:

  • Switch off alerts, chats and notifications during the interview

  • Avoid high-traffic areas of your home

  • Find a spot that you are comfortable working in with a strong wi-fi connection to reduce the risk of having to switch rooms mid-interview.

  1. Speak Clearly and Precisely

Making sure the interviewer can hear you is very important, especially during a remote interview where sometimes the technology can glitch.

  • If you miss the question, ask the interviewer to repeat themselves

  • Don't worry if you also have to repeat your answer

  • During virtual interviewing you do lose some of the non-verbal cues of engagement, so ensure to be prepared to speak to why you are interested in this opportunity and have questions to better understand if this is the right opportunity for you!

  • Leave a few seconds at the end of sentences or after you ask a question to minimize talking over each other

  1. Remember, you're still on camera!

Similar to being in-person, the interviewer can see your facial expression to make sure you are clearly engaged and not distracted.

  1. Be yourself!

Interviewing can often be uncomfortable, especially in a remote setting where it might not be natural but we want you to be comfortable being yourself so we can get to know you and your professional experience. By coming prepared to speak to your experience and understanding what to expect from the interview, it will help ease some of these nerves and discomfort.

Most importantly, Have Fun!
